It´s all about shade and intensity (photo: Mikko Koivisto) |
For as long as I can remember, women have been expected
to wear new clothes every time they make an appearance in just about anywhere,
while at the same time, men have been accepted in the same old suit over and
over again. Why do women put up with it? Are we brain washed, is it low self-esteem
or do we really want to have so many clothes and spend so much money on clothes
we hardly ever wear?
Having thought about this, I think that it is time for
a change. Not only because it is unfair that women have to spend so much time
and effort as well as money on clothes, accessories etc. but because this over
consuming is destroying our beautiful planet.
We are starting to hear and see people talking about
cutting down on air travel but no one seems to be taking it seriously that Fast
Fashion is a bigger culprit than air travel. It is good that people are waking
up to the fact that we cannot go on mounting up waste year after year and that
it really matters, what each of us is doing. Somehow, we don´t seem really to
understand yet, that our daily choices play a huge part in the big picture.
I remember, when I was taking a walk with my father
when I was about six years old and saw a huge smoke coming out of a factory
pipe. I was alarmed by it and was asking my father about the smoke. I was worried that the smoke will pollute the
whole sky, but my father laughed and told me that the world is so big that it
will never happen. That there is so much space in the world that man can never
make a difference in nature, no matter how much smoke we put out to the world.
Being a little girl, I believed my father only to realize later on that he had
no idea what he was taking about. Of course he wanted to make me feel better,
but in those days, people really believed that they can pollute as much as they
like without any consequences. This conversation took place over 60 years ago.
It seems that people have been happily polluting the earth for all this time
and it has finally caught up with us.
There are many people, who would like to take part and
do something worthwhile to improve the situation but don´t know exactly what
they could do. What everyone can do is let go of old shopping behavior and stop
spending on things they don´t really need. Take charge of your life and decide
that you are worthy as a woman, even if you don´t have a closet full of clothes
you won´t be wearing any time soon or will perhaps will never use.
All women seem to be in the same boat because a few
days ago, I read a tweet by Arianna Huffington, who
is among other things, the CEO of Thrive Global and she wrote:
“Love that Angela Merkel is a fellow believer in style
repeats. The expectation that women wear something new every day is a
stress-creating time-suck and a competitive advantage for men. Freeing up time
spent choosing what to wear for work is a key to success we often overlook.”
Her
tweet was a reply to Angela Merkel´s message:
“For
a man, it´s no problem at all to wear a dark blue suit a hundred days in a row
but if I wear the same blazer four times within two weeks, the letters start pouring
in.”
I
stopped to think about this for quite a while. If a woman, in one of the
highest positions in the world, needs to think about whether she wears the same
jacket too often in public, where does that leave all the rest of us? We seem
to have lost the plot...
It
is not difficult to get your wardrobe together once and for all. There are
people, who have been trained to help people, who have to focus on different things
and still look the part at all times. These people can help you build a system
that fulfills the demands of the daily requirements while at the same time,
saves you time to focus on the more important things in your life.
Actually,
you can find many things out by yourself, too. To give you something to go by,
here are a few things to get you started on getting your own wardrobe up to
speed. You need to decide which of the six dominant color characteristics match
your own coloring. By sorting this out, you will be able to focus even more
into color, if you like, or not. Color is something people notice first, so it
would be a good idea to start there. The six dominant color characteristics
are: soft, clear, deep, light, warm and cool. That means that each color you
will the use, will be more soft, clear, deep, light, warm or cool, depending on
your own personal dominant color characteristic. We all have one and it can be
seen by you and others.
When
this has been successfully established, then you can start focusing on which
neutral colors you would like to have as the backbone of your wardrobe. Each
dominant has all colors. The shade and intensity is the key. After that it is
smooth sailing. Make a list of which pieces of clothing you need at work and
which pieces you need at other times. If you are more work oriented, then get
your working wardrobe out of the way first. It will save you loads of time on a
daily basis when all is done. There are many ways for you to look the part and
feel comfortable with a wardrobe that takes you through anything in your daily
life, over and over again.
For
over 60 years, too many of us have not been paying attention to the world
around us in ways that need to be done today. It will be quite a challenge,
especially to the older generation, since we are so used to doing what we like.
It is the young generation, who need our help to get things right after so many
years of wrong and harmful decisions. Fortunately, there are many young people,
who have already started to dedicate their time to make the world a healthier
place.
I´m
a mother and a grandmother. My daughter had a wonderful childhood living in the
country and today, her daughter has the same privilege, but I´m wondering, for
how long, and what about her children?
