How to Choose the Best Color Jewelry for Yourself

20 years ago, there wasn´t as much jewelry to choose from as today. There are many reasons for wearing jewelry, and having studied fashion in London, I had become familiar wearing jewelry every day, well before it was so popular.  In those days, I used to travel back and forth between Helsinki and London to pick up jewelry for special occasions for my clients because we only had very traditional and very small pieces of jewelry to choose from. In those days, people didn´t give much thought to jewelry in everyday lives, like they do today. There really was no culture to wearing jewelry, at least in our part of the world. If you wore jewelry, you had inherited the few pieces or had received them as a gift at your confirmation or when you finished school. 

Now, when I look back, it was such a different world, and people didn´t give much thought to wearing jewelry because there was very little choice to choose from. It all changed when costume jewelry was first introduced  in a big way to ladies of all walks of life. Before that, costume jewelry was unheard of and once we began using it and actually making a business with it, jewelry became a very popular subject among ladies and later, also men.

It was a beautiful time, when we had so much material to work with while teaching about colors, also how to combine your overall look with the best color and style of jewelry to combine everything with, to make you look like a million dollars.

One of the main questions was about the use of gold and silver. Who needed to wear gold and who needed silver as the best basic color. How to combine these two colors and who would look best in those colors. Was it ok to use both? What color of beads worked with what color of people and their outfits? What about broaches? How to wear bracelets and necklaces? How to look wealthy with jewelry without putting on too much? How to have fun with different kinds of jewelry and look distinguished at the same time? There were so many questions and those people, who actually took the time to learn about these accessories, were most successful, not only in their business, but also in their private lives.

With jewelry, it is very much about color and how to make it work for you. Today we are using much more cool colored metals in jewelry than we did  warm colored metals. Perhaps the reason for this is that earlier, it was gold, that was considered the No. 1 material for jewelry. Also bronze was widely used and is a color that works best for people with a WARM undertone and especially with those people who have WARM as their dominant color characteristic.

As a rule of thumb, people who have a yellow undertone to their skin as well as those, who have WARM as their dominant color characteristic, look best in gold and bronze metal.

People, who have a blue undertone to their skin as well as people, who have COOL as their dominant color characteristic, look best in silver and platinum colored  jewelry.

The colors in stones and beads go best along these lines as well. When they are used with the dominant color characteristic in mind, we create harmony all around us. That gives us an appearance of looking good and being in control and having a harmonious appearance.

If, however, you want to show off your jewelry and make sure it is seen, then you don´t really need to go by these rules. When we want to look wealthy for example, then huge pieces of gold together with a solid color, especially black, white, red and other noticeable colors would be your choice. Diamonds, of course, are always in style!

It really depends on what you want to project when wearing jewelry. That is the key. You might like to wear just a few, carefully chosen pieces or just the opposite, and pile on a whole lot.  Either way, you are making a statement and it makes you look better when jewelry is a natural part of your outfit and an extension of you. Personally, I like to wear costume jewelry because there is so much selection to choose from and if I lose a piece, it won´t be the end of the world. They are so easy to mix and match.
